Frequently asked questions
Q.What is Relay, exactly? What does it do for me?
Relay is an AI phone-caller — a personal secretary that handles the calls you don't want to be on. You hand it a phone number and a goal ("book me an appointment with Dr. Park," "confirm my 7 pm reservation at Casa Vega," "ask Blue Shield what's covered for code 99213"), and Relay places the call, navigates the IVR, sits on hold, talks to the agent on the other end, transcribes both sides of the conversation in real time, and hands you the answer when it's done. If the line isn't in your language, it flips into Interpreter Mode and translates live. You get the result; you don't have to be on the call.
Q.Does Relay record my calls?
Relay records the audio of the calls it places on your behalf only while a call is in progress and only to produce the live transcript and the post-call summary. Recordings are uploaded over TLS to our backend, transcribed, and then deleted on a short retention window (target: 7 days; see the Privacy Policy for the authoritative number). You can also delete any individual call's recording and transcript from the call history at any time. Relay never records calls you place yourself on the phone app — it only handles the calls you ask it to make.
Q.What does Relay do when it gets stuck?
When Relay genuinely can't decide on its own — a security question only you can answer, an off-script counter-offer, a request to verify your identity — it pages you in. You get a push notification with the running transcript, you tap to join the live call, and Relay hands you the line with full context. If you're not reachable within a short window, Relay politely asks the other party for a callback and hangs up rather than guessing.
Q.What languages does Interpreter Mode support?
Interpreter Mode is the live two-way translation feature Relay flips into when the other side answers in a language you don't speak. It's a sub-feature of the main goal-mode flow — not the primary thing Relay does, but the one that matters when language is the blocker. At launch it supports English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Arabic, Tagalog, and Vietnamese in both directions. We're expanding the list — if Interpreter Mode can't handle a language you need, email dapsdev.support@gmail.com with the language and (if you can) the country code so we know where to prioritize.
Q.Why does Relay need permission to make calls and access my contacts?
Relay needs the phone permission so it can dial out and the microphone permission so it can speak to the line and route your voice if you're brought in. Contacts access is optional and only used to let you pick a name ("call Dr. Park's office") instead of typing a number; the contact list itself never leaves your phone. You can revoke any of these in iPhone → Settings → Relay at any time without uninstalling.
Q.Is Relay legal to use? Do I have to tell the person on the other end?
Call-recording and AI-disclosure laws vary by jurisdiction — in two-party-consent states and several countries you must inform the other party that the call is being recorded and/or that you're using an AI agent. Relay can announce both at the start of the call (configurable in Settings → Disclosure) and we recommend leaving disclosure ON unless you're certain of the local law. We are not lawyers; if you're using Relay for regulated work (legal, medical, financial), consult counsel in your jurisdiction before relying on it.
Q.How do I cancel my subscription or delete my account?
Relay is in pre-launch and not yet on the App Store. When it ships, subscriptions will be managed through Apple (iPhone → Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions). To delete your account and all associated call history, recordings, and transcripts, use the Delete Account option in Settings or email dapsdev.support@gmail.com with the subject "Data deletion request" — we process deletions within 30 days.
